The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines triathlon race in Camarines Sur is the country’s first-ever. The race will swim off (2K), bike next (for 90 kms.) and finish with a 21K run this Sunday, Aug. 23. Among the hundreds of triathletes joining are the trio of Gerry Malixi and Annie Neric, both residing in Cebu, and Manila-based cyclist Raul Romulo. They’ll participate in the relay race. I asked Gerry Malixi for the event details and their preparation. Here was his email…
Gerry, Annie and Raul
“Who would sponsor a bunch of 40-year-old, over-the-hill slowpokes?” This was the response I gave my good friend Raul Romulo when he said he would ask Flying V to support our stint in the first Ironman 70.3 race in the Philippines. Little did I know I was in for a major surprise.

Two years ago (August 28,2007, to be exact), I wrote this piece. It’s relevant given that PacMan is scheduled to play basketball again in Cebu.
I LIED. In an article I wrote two days ago, I vowed to stay five feet away from Manny Pacquiao when I’ll guard him in basketball. But when we met last Sunday morning from 10 to 12 at the Cebu Coliseum—his Team Pacquiao versus our Cebu Sports Media squad—we collided. Literally.

Yesterday (Sunday, August 26), from 10 to 12 in the morning at the Cebu Coliseum, I played basketball with Manny Pacquiao. I joined a bunch sportswriters and radio personalities called the Cebu Sports Media team. We dribbled and guarded and rebounded against Team Pacquiao. Read these two stories: from Sun.Star Daily Cebu “Comics steal Pacquiao’s show in fans day” and from The Freeman “Pacman KOs Cebu Media Anew.” Enjoy these photos…
BEIJING (Originally posted on Aug. 12, 2008) – Rain. That’s the story here last Sunday. And it’s both amusing and quirky. On our Day One in Beijing, an envelope of grey skies and haze greeted us upon arrival at the airport. On Day 2, the sky was as clear as a light blue swimming pool while the sun roasted this city like a Peking Duck. But two days ago-our third day here-it turned opposite: gushing and pouring buckets of rain on Beijing. Thus far, the weather here has been fickle and volatile.
Last Sunday was our first day to watch the outdoor sport of tennis. The Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center-middle-named “Green” because it sits on the Olympic Green Forest-is massive. It has a total of 10 tennis courts: one Center Court, two main stadiums and seven smaller rectangles.
